Assalamualaikum Ayah, Ibu nak share gambar² kat KK last 3 weeks before Ayah balik ke UK. This weekends ibu bawak kenit² pegi KLCC (as if takde tpt lain), beli sandal and kasut main bola for him. Sunday, I spent the whole day cleaning the house and ironing, maklumla dah takde bibik... Najmi punya basikal yang Opah bagi dah tercabut tayar nye, I'm not sure it's the driver or the bike. Anyway, we love you and miss you so munchie..

From KLCC to Rehmat

Sukkur barrage-the longest irrigation system
The Plant

View all 4 photos...
This was Ibu's experience during her trip to Pakistan for work recently
In 1215, the world was not a joined up place, people and animals alike traveled at an amble… this was the first sentence in John Man’s Kublai Khan. That really reminds me of my journey to Sukkur and Ghotki, the old cities of Sindh province in Pakistan.
The Islamic Republic of Pakistan is bordered on the west by Iran, on the north and northwest by Afghanistan, on the northeast by China, on the east and southeast by India, and on the south by the Arabian Sea. Pakistan has great extremes of elevation reaching the highest point at the Himalayan peak of K2 in the north and the lowest point at the Arabian Sea coast in the south. The country has a total area of 796 095 sq km with a population of 165 million. Six provinces in the country are Baluchistan, Federal Capital Area, North-West Frontier, Sindh, Punjub and Tribal Areas. The capital city of Pakistan is Islamabad though the country’s largest city is Karachi.
I have never been to Pakistan and was constantly reminded of the difficult political situation in the country that I felt grateful when Hatarmizi agreed to join me to Pakistan. We arrived at the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi on the 7th of April 2006 at about 9.30 pm local time. It was like Penang International Airport in the 1980s, I remember waiting for my grandparents coming back from hajj at the airport back then. The busy airport, the narrow ally, the aged electronic equipments reminds me of the old Penang airport. We took about half an hour from the arrival gate to the baggage claim, immigration counter and the arrival hall. The most convenient thing I found and felt grateful for at the airports in Pakistan was, there is a dedicated line for women to undergo security check.
Urdu is the official language in Pakistan. Although similar to Hindi as a spoken language, Urdu uses a Persian derived script and incorporates many Arabic words. Their language is so melodious that they sound as if they are singing! If you close your eyes and walk yourself among the Pakistanis, you will feel like you’re in the famous Hindustan movie, but once you open your eyes, reality walks in and then you have to use your imagination to envisage those handsome actors and actresses. Pakistanis adore poetry and memorize long poems. Remember the famous Mirza Ghalib who wrote memorable poetry in Persian? He is a Pakistani.
97% of the people in Pakistan are Muslim. Three quarters of the Muslims are Sunni while the remaining is Shia’h. Another thing that will stick to my mind about this Islamic republic is women were politely dressed. 99% of the women I met in Pakistan were wearing the Punjabi long blouse and pants. So much of the city girls scenery that I see everyday during my lunch hour in Suria KLCC, I think these politely dressed and well mannered teenagers in Pakistan are a comfort to my aging eyes. Despite my tiring and exhausting journey around Pakistan, it is always soothing that I can find escape from those obscene acts that I am forced to see among the teenagers in my own country.
We were taken to the Avari Hotel in Karachi by the hotel transportation. It took about 30 minutes from the airport to the hotel. Karachi is the capital of Sindh province, it is the country’s only seaport and a major financial, industrial, and commercial center. Karachi city is still alive and vibrant even after 10 pm.
Our flight to Sukkur was at 7.30 am the next morning. We left the hotel at 6 am when it was still dark. Our air journey through out Pakistan was via Pakistan International Airlines, the national airlines that serves flights within Pakistan and a number of other countries. We arrived at Sukkur Airport at about 9.30 am, two Carigali Staff House representatives were waiting for us at the airport.
Sukkur is the third largest city in Sindh province, it is located on the west bank of the River Indus. Sukkur (pronounced as Saqar) means intense. In the 10th century AD when Arabs invaded Sukkur they found extreme hot and cold climate, and called it saqar. The city is the starting point for all the archeological sites in Sindh. It is also the narrowest point of the lower Indus. Hence it was here the first barrage on the Indus was made. 7 Canals were dig to distribute water in all parts of the province which eventually made Pakistan to have the longest irrigation system in the world with 38000 miles of irrigation canals known as Indus Food System.
The Staff House representative took us for a short trip around Sukkur Barrage. The weather was so hot that it made me so uncomfortable. Feeling edgy and not-so-sweet tempered (as I always perceived myself!!), I felt so guilty when the friendly Pakistani brought us to the museum and library for visit whereas in my heart, I just wanted to get on with the journey to Rehmat. My salute to Hatarmizi for being able to keep himself composed, chatting and listening to them under the hot sun!
The staff house is a three-storey bungalow with armed guards. Yusof Shahid and Nizam were having breakfast at the dining hall when we arrived. They were also going to Rehmat but for different purposes. Yusof Shahid had been the Country Manager for Petronas Carigali Pakistan for the past 2 years. Before we started our journey to Rehmat, we met Haji Zaki. One of the permanent workforces in Rehmat Gas Processing Plant. He worked back to back with Haji Saeman as a Plant Manager. Breakfast was chapatti and some hard bread.
The sole reason of our trip was to gather data and met with operations team with regards to Petronas Carigali Pakistan’s Rehmat Gas Processing Plant operating problems. The journey from Sukkur to Rehmat was a memorable one. We were taken to Rehmat by a four wheel drive with 2 armed bodyguards. There are about four settlements along our way. Farms are everywhere. About 25% of Pakistan total land area is cultivated. Principal crops in Pakistan include wheat, rice, cotton lint and corn. Pakistan produced the finest quality of cotton textiles in the world’s market. That’s the reason why the designer outfits that you wear was made in Pakistan.
I was deep in thoughts throughout the 2 hours journey. I heard about poverty in the media, saw it on TV and the internet. When I was a child, my mother always remind us of the poor in Euthopia when we refused to finish up our meals. Now that I’m a mother and faced with the living condition of the poor in Pakistan with my own very eyes, I guess there is no excuse for me to throw away foods when these people don’t have enough to eat and poor access to basic necessities. Under the hot blazing sun some men and women are working on farm. I was in a mix feeling see women aged like me working on farms with their small children helping them, their month old baby under a tree nearby while I am in the comfort of an air conditioned four wheeled drive. I guess most of the women here work in the farm to support their families. The children that I saw on our way were all skinny and their eyes were unusually bright or dull. These were usually symptoms of malnutrition. My heart went with them. I could not stop comparing them with my two angels back at home. While these skinny children are watching and helping their parents under the sun, our children are at the comfort of our home watching Barney and playing Fisher-Price toys. “Children, do you know that on the other side of the world your friends are still living in a hut, working under the hot blazing sun in a farm to support their families, no medical facilities, no nutritious meals, no proper sanitation and no proper education.” Those were some of the sentences I stored in my memory to tell my children. What can do I do to help? What can we do to help these people?
Forget the watch, handphone and whatever quartz in your system, you will find this journey to Rehmat was like walking in a medieval timeline. Some of houses and the shops resemble a hundred years old buildings while the others are still living in a wheat hut with donkeys as the main vehicle. Here at 4.30 pm there was no traffic rush to reach home. People moved slowly and stopped whenever they meet somebody they know, chatting and possibly drinking chai at the corner, portray how time seems to stop here. At 4.30 pm in Kuala Lumpur, people are working utmost their wits to finish up their task so that they can get out of the office before anybody did and drive freely without being caught in a traffic jam or be able to get into the LRT coach without being squeezed, pushed or sandwiched by other commuters.
We arrived at Rehmat Gas Processing Plant at about 6.30 pm in the evening. We were so happy to see another civilization in the Sindh province, the plant! Now, we felt like we’re back on track with the timeline. The people at the plant were having a volleyball match when we drove in. Haji Saeman and Marzhuki were still sweating from the match when they greeted us. Apart from Haji Zaki, these are the only Malaysians working in the plant. About 70 men worked at the plant at one time. Haji Saeman, Haji Zaki and Marzhuki worked on a 4 weeks on 4 weeks off basis. Haji Zaki, Haji Saeman, Yusof Shahid, and Marzhuki leave their families in Malaysia. Being with them for four days, I admired their strength and wisdom. Despite the fact that they are working thousand of miles away from their families, in a hostile country in the middle of the desert, they worked passionately in the plant! The operational supports came from Petronas Carigali Pakistan’s head office in Islamabad. Bakry and Ghazali, the operation and maintenance engineer came whenever the plant needed their support. In fact, Bakry came the next day to join our technical discussion and site visits.
Despite the small processing capacity (70 MMSCFD), it is the first Carigali’s gas plants that are equipped with gas sweetening and hydrocarbon / water dew point control (HCDP) unit. The gas sweetening unit utilizes MDEA solution as absorbent for CO2 and H2S absorption process. The HCDP unit utilizes silica gel solid desiccant for water and heavy hydrocarbons adsorption process. Being a process engineer in Carigali, I guess I was fortunate to be given the chance to be in Rehmat, of course it was never the same, standing here with all the process equipments vs reading about them in the DCC room. There were a lot of things that I learned and understand from this visit. In fact, there’s a truth in what Yusof Shahid said “.. the plant is a baby who’s facing his teething problem”
Apart from commercial aspect, Carigali has also performed their social obligation to the tribe around Rehmat Plant. In fact when we were at the plant, the Country Manager was also there to launch new funding projects for the schools that the company has built. When Carigali came to Rehmat in 2004, we provided educational support to the children by building schools as well as schoolteachers. Looking back at my short experience at Rehmat, I can stand up proudly and tell anyone listening that Carigali has not forgotten the unfortunate ones, we gave something back for something we have received. As a Malaysian, I felt proud of what my company has done to this nation. But isn’t that one of our aspiration? Energy received, energy returned.
